THE STATE OF THE ART OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IN BRAZIL: EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION, AND TREATMENT
Abstract
This article provides an integrated overview of the current state of alcohol consumption in Brazil, combining epidemiological data, public policies, preventive strategies, and available treatment modalities. High consumption patterns persist, particularly among men, young women, and vulnerable groups, with notable regional and racial disparities. Despite advances such as stricter drinking-and-driving laws, major gaps remain in pricing policies, availability control, and marketing regulation, alongside challenges in implementing evidence-based prevention. The manuscript examines community, school, and family-based prevention programs, as well as the structure and effectiveness of Brazil’s health-care network, describing psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments and the role of primary care. It concludes by stressing the need for integrated policies, expanded access to effective therapies, improved epidemiological monitoring, and stronger regulation to counter industry influence and reduce alcohol-related harm nationwide.
