A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION IN ARGENTINA
Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive and updated analysis of alcohol consumption in Argentina. The study aimed to synthesize evidence across three key dimensions: epidemiology, prevention and intervention. First, we present national epidemiological indicators, identifying vulnerability in specific population groups and associated risk factors. Subsequently, we critically analyze current public prevention policies, along with evidence-based community and educational initiatives implemented locally. Furthermore, this paper describes intervention strategies aimed at reducing alcohol consumption, addressing the associated risks and harms. Ultimately, the goal is to offer a critical assessment of the current approach at epidemiological and interventional levels, proposing concrete areas for improvement in public health. The methodology centered on a narrative review of the available literature and information. We performed a comprehensive review and synthesis of evidence derived from official records, national statistics, academic reports, and recent scientific publications. The findings highlight the urgent need to strengthen the scientific evidence production system regarding alcohol consumption in Argentina. Although action frameworks exist, the lack of periodicity and comprehensiveness in national epidemiological records limits the understanding of the problem’s full scope and impedes the rigorous evaluation of interventions. We conclude that the main area for public health improvement includes securing the constant contribution of high-quality scientific evidence. This is essential for designing and implementing evidence-based policies, prevention programs, and clinical intervention models, thereby maximizing effectiveness and optimizing the allocation of resources aimed at reducing alcohol consumption and its associated risks in Argentine society.
