Executive Functions and Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with High Blood Pressure

Abstract

The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive study aimed at evaluating the executive functions and risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome. A non-probabilistic sample of 211 patients participated, with age range 60-69, mean 63.55 (SD 2.66), treated at the Arterial Hypertension Unit of the University Hospital of Caracas. 50.2% participants presented a clinical diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. In addition to blood pressure, obesity is the main risk factor for metabolic syndrome. A 78.67% of the sample presents an altered execution in the TMT a and 76.78% in the TMT b for its reference group. Through a covariance analysis, a significant effect of the altered executive function was observed on both the TMT a (F = 5.32, p = 0.02), and the TMT b (F = 4.46, p = 0.03) on the metabolic syndrome, once the effects of age, years of schooling, gender, smoking and sedentarism. The observed association between impaired executive function and metabolic syndrome is a crucial aspect in the evaluation and approach of this type of patients.
